Training Progress

Training Plan - E2

This week I decided that it wasn't necessary for a comprehensive training plan. Instead I decided it was more worthwhile just to practice fetch specifically instead of redoing the fetch progression. I think this will help consolidate fetch more. However, what I will experiment with is doing fetch from different locations on the house. This means things like from the couch or in the kitchen. I think this will be helpful as sometimes we may not be able to take Winnie to a designated area but instead can only multitask doing our own things whilst also playing fetch with her.

Training Journal - E2

Monday

I started off the week by practicing fetch inside from the couch. At first, Winnie seemed a bit confused about the change in environment. The main difference was how to return the toy she would have to jump up the couch. This caused her to think that I was no longer playing with her and she would start to go play by herself. I think today she was a bit confused with fetch which made it a bit harder.

Tuesday

Today I tried fetch in the kitchen. I thought instead of the couch, the kitchen would be an easier change in environment. The floor was slippery which made Winnie a little cautious but she still enjoyed fetch just as much. Sometimes, due to the slipperiness she would slip past me and have to return. Furthermore, she also would occasionally drop the toy whilst returning. I think this is largely related to her ability to fetch rather than her understanding so I do not think any necessary changes are needed.

Wednesday

The next day I decided to change to sitting on the dining table. I think this spot is quite fitting as I’m still sitting down, which results in a change in my body language. However, the position Winnie returns the toy to is the same as before. As a result I thought that this was a good idea for a progression between normal fetch. She did quite well, but I think what she found difficult was navigating through the chairs. I thought it was quite funny as this was also related to her fetch ability and overall body coordination as a puppy. However, as I mentioned before this wasn’t due to her understanding of fetch so I continued practice as normal.

Thursday

Today I decided to go back to the couch training. However, what I first got her to do was jump onto the couch a few times. Originally in the house she wasn’t allowed to jump onto the couch. However, as we have another couch in the house that’s more suitable for dogs I wanted her to get used to being allowed to go on this couch first. After doing so I think she understood that she had to jump up with the toy. She did this quite well which was surprising. I was quite happy with this, as on Monday she struggled a lot.

Friday

On Friday I decided to start moving around the house whilst playing fetch. For me, I had this idea in my head that she could play herself and then give someone who was walking around the house a toy. Whilst this was quite advanced for her I think that I can start introducing it and overtime (maybe 3-4 months) she will start to be able to enjoy this too. She definitely struggled quite a bit. What I found was when I walked away she wouldn’t be able to find me sometimes and then think I stopped playing with her. I think this is something that will have to be worked on over the course of multiple months, so I think for the rest of the AIF project I will definitely leave it for now.

Saturday

Today I was too busy to conduct any training. However, I did get my sister to play fetch with Winnie as she was getting quite restless. I think this didn’t go that well. However, this wasn’t due to Winnie not being able to fetch with other family members, it was largely due to my sisters poor coordination which meant the throws that she gave Winnie weren’t very good.

Sunday

Today I decided to conduct some more basic fetch in the living room with the TV on. This went quite well, however I found sometimes she would get distracted by the TV and forget we were playing. However, apart from that most of the time she would do quite well. Overall I think her fetch has improved a lot this week with her being challenged with

Output

Output Revision - E1, PA1

When conducting the progress check with Ms Feldhoff I reviewed what I wanted to do with my output and whether I was on track. However, after the progress check I decided it would be good to start planning my output more thoroughly so I could ensure that I had everything for the holidays. Furthermore, I also wanted to have a better idea of my final project so I could start doing some thinking around the output before I started.

After thinking for a bit I decided I would do a montage type of video. I think that this would be a good idea as it could incorporate the videos that I took of dog training over the course of the AIF project. Apart from that I could also do a longer video talking about the different strategies and my entire process.

For my output I may want to include parts of me talking. However as I didn't think that I should make the output too long I didn't think it was necessary to rent extra equipment (e.g. audio equipment). This was good as that meant I was all prepared to go into the holidays to complete my output as I didn't require extra things from the school library.

JOURNAL ENTRY WEEK 10

Week 10 Journal
00:00 / 03:22
SUMMARY OF JOURNAL ENTRY - E1, E2

Decide to take a more relaxed approach to training

  • Decided to do this because I thought repetitions would be more important to consolidate Winnie’s learning

  • Also represents development to learning goal where it makes fetch more accessible for Winnie around the house and when we are busy

Learnt to make own progressions

  • After conducting the AIF project for a long time I now have been able to make my own progressions for fetch

  • This involved the progression between strictly the floor and no obstacles to being able to hop on and off the couch

Output revision

  • Ready for holiday and have all the equipment I need

  • Also have a better idea of my final learning output

Overall thoughts

  • AIF project a lot more smooth now

  • Have gotten a lot more used to implementing different strategies
